If you are squeamish, you may want to avoid the linked page. Rick Morrison was at the right angle to snap two shots of Mike Fucito’s bloody face near the very end of the Sounders’ 1:0 Open Cup win over FC Dallas.

Mike Fucito was actually called for the foul on the play that caused this mess. He suffered an elbow blow but reports today are that he is fine after needing nine stitches to close the gash.
Now that those images are seared into your brain, here are some from the action…

No way that’s not a red card. League needs to review these kind of plays to keep the players safe
Watch the play again, please. Carefully. Mike Fucito actually propels himself very forcefully INTO the Dallas player (#2) and then hangs onto him, pulling on his upper body. The foul was actually “charging” on Fucito for crashing into #2 so forcefully. At some point in that motion (likely the initial contact with #2′s arm/chest), the force of the blow sliced his eyebrow. Fucito caused that contact himself, and then hung on to #2 and pulled him off the ball.
This was an unfortunate and accidental cut caused by a hard charge, not any indication of serious foul play or violent conduct. Remember as well that the head is a place where relatively small cuts will bleed very profusely. A nine-stich gash on an eyebrow will produce a lot more blood than expected.
And no, I am not a Dallas fan. I am Sounders loud and proud, but also a referee.
