Danny Medina, seven others ink with Kitsap Pumas

The Kitsap Sun reports the Pumas of Bremerton have signed eight more players, including an early tryouts standout from Texas, midfielder Danny Medina.

The Pumas start their pre-season match schedule this week, including a Saturday visit to Bellingham to play United.

The Pumas will fight for the first-ever Ruffneck Cup, for Puget Sound bragging rights, starting this PDL season.

From the Kitsap Sun: The defending Premier Development League champions added eight players to their official roster this week: Daniel Fabian, Sam Zipperstein, Enrigue Hidalgo, Justin Robbins, Jarrett Robbins, Danny Medina, Drew Jensen and Ben Truax.

The Kitsap Pumas hope Texan Danny Medina will be a creative force in the club's midfield in 2012. Medina was a versatile defender / midfielder in college.(Jeff Halstead)

goalWA.net spoke with Medina when he came up from Texas for Pumas open tryouts (see video above). Medina appeared to be the highlight of those sessions, garnering plenty of looks from Pumas staff for his ease on the ball and passing techniques.

Drew Jensen. (David Falk)

Drew Jensen was invited to the 2012 combine of Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids. Jensen was a four year starter for the Northwest University (Kirkland, WA)  Eagle men’s soccer team as a defender/midfielder and helped lead the 2011 Eagles to a 10-3-1 conference record, 11-5-3 overall record and a spot in the Cascade Conference post season semifinal game. He was selected as a second team All-Cascade Conference team member. Drew’s junior season was shortened after suffering a broken leg nine games into the year, but through his hard work and rehabilitation, he was ready to play in 2011.

Daniel Fabian gets rave reviews in his InfoSport Scouting Report, featuring plenty of perfect fives to open the eyes of anyone caring to read. Fabian was a Friar.

  1. I like the line on Fabian’s scouting report:
    “Combine Coach’s Overall Comments
Top midfielder. Controlled the tempo of every agme. Has MLS ability.”

Ben Truax from Walsh College in Ohio scored 51 goals in 4 seasons including 20 in 19 games last season. Was conference MVP. Scored over 75 goals in high school including an Ohio state record of 37 in a season. Played indoor this past winter for Ohio Vortex in PASL-Pro and played for Akron Assualt in USL PDL last spring and summer.

  2. I think Pumas fans should be excited about 2012. We now know 18 names, and those names make the Pumas favorites again this year.

    • oh yes definitaly! Offense appears significantly better. There has been some scoring draughts the 3 previous seasons. Last season alone three 0-0 draws at home and then two consecutive 0-1 losses to Port Vale and Victoria. I wanna see what Zipperstein, Truax and Fabian can do.

Do not know about defense – how do you replace two All-PDL Defenders Mark Lee and Daniel Scott?

        • Yes – 6’7″, 6’5″, 6’4″ to go along with 6’3″ Taylor Hyde (if healthy and ready to go) and Steve Mohn who is only 6’0″ to 6’1″. Trusting Coach James R, I do not see him bringing in some tall guys who are not good.

Oh – and a 6’6″ keeper in Zac Lubin!!

  3. Could be a 6ft 7 goober?! Time will only tell. Enrigue Hidalgo is by far the best new signing for them. Not only is he a good guy, but he is a great on the ball, hopefully his indoor skillz can transfer over like they did Alex Megson. Plus he is a local guy that will bring fans and family the games. Just like that hottie with a body, Kyle Johnson.

Speaking of Alex Megson?! Maybe pumas need to make a call out to that guy!

  4. OK! Something needs to be said about Ben Truax from Walsh College in Ohio scored 51 goals. I just watched his highlight video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDaqiKciTy8.

Now he looks like a very good player, I will give him that. BUT if the missed chance at the 1:20 mark is any indication of the talent he is going up against. I’m going to have to dock him points for playing against the blind. So funny.

    • Kitsap Kid, thanks for making me spill coffee on myself from laughing! Yeah, that missed chance was pretty cringe-worthy.
