MARYSVILLE, Wash. — The North Sound SeaWolves displayed a stout, physical defense and made a late attempt to equalize but lost 1-0 to Gonzaga in a preseason scrimmage in front of about 130 fans Saturday at Quil Ceda Stadium at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

The game was open to players who survived two rounds of tryouts for the SeaWolves as the team attempts to finalize its roster for the upcoming 2012 season, which begins in late May.
Twenty-two players suited up for the Edmonds-based SeaWolves, a member of the Premier Development League, the highest level of amateur soccer in the United States.
With a roster made up of players who had little chance to play with each other beforehand, the SeaWolves showed good communications and effort in competing with a Gonzaga team that went 4-12-2 last season.
The Zags had an opportunity to take the lead with about 15 minutes to play in the first half when James Matern headed a ball on goal but Michael Osmialowski headed the ball off the line for the SeaWolves. But in extra time of the first half, Nico Sanchez crossed the ball in front of the net to a rushing Connor McGregor, who finished for the game’s only goal.
Still, the SeaWolves battled in the second half. About 10 minutes after halftime, Solomon Gold centered to Eddie Rangel in front of the Gonzaga goal but Rangel’s shot went high over the cross bar. In the last 10 minutes, Tody Tolo, Abdkidir Jama and Osmialowski all had shots that nearly equalized for the SeaWolves.
Keeper Elmer Rodriguez, the third SeaWolves keeper of the game, did well to keep his team in the match in the second half, making several tough saves. He was helped by a defense led by Ben Elliot, Geno Tibbets and Alex Bresnan.
The SeaWolves will next evaluate the performances from Saturday to determine who will continue on and potentially join the squad for the upcoming season. The team opens the season May 20 at Fraser Valley. North Sound plays all eight of its home games in June, beginning on Friday, June 1 against the Washington Crossfire.
