The STATE of Soccer in WASHINGTON

“Our vision is for every child to have access to a creative education that leverages the power of soccer to realize these dreams, on and off the field.”

goalWA.net invites a new locally-driven world soccer charity to tell us more about themselves. On August 11-12 at Tacoma’s Pacific Sports Center the Global Team will hold an indoor soccer tournament fundraiser. See below.

ARISE, a targeted support of the Global Team, does football-related work in Kampala, Uganda.

Founded in 2011, the Global Team uses the sport of soccer to advance primary education for youth around the world. Through our soccer-based model, we achieve our mission of ‘providing universal access to primary education through the sport of soccer’ by partnering with local organizations, currently focused in Haiti and Uganda.

Through partnership, the Global Team provides education through soccer curriculum, teacher/coach training and organizational development focusing to environment, math, health and creative writing/speaking.

Our History

The ‘Ah Ha’ moment came in the most unlikeliest of places, from a 6-year-old Korean boy. After spending a year teaching in South Korea, our founder Heather Turney, took her students into the gym during math class. By using games and activities, suddenly she found the kids not only were excited to learn, but were learning more deeply while being overall better ‘teammates’ to their fellow students. However, it wasn’t until one day during Space Week when the idea of the Global Team fully formed. One student, Ewan, just simply couldn’t memorize the planets, or so it seemed; until they got onto the soccer field. Almost instantly, this boy suddenly started dribbling around the cones on the field chanting, “Around Mercury, Around Venus, Earth and Mars. Next comes Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, Last is Neptune”.

From this creative song grew into what has now become the Global Team, and this one boy’s educational experience on the soccer field has expanded to influence hundreds of youth around the world.

How We Achieve Education through Soccer

Using our philosophy, the Global Team partners with locally-based organizations, using their organizational strengths to enhance primary education through soccer. As highlighted by our most recent partner, ARISE Foundation Uganda, “With this partnership, we are confident that the Global Team’s education through soccer program will have a great impact to the youth of Uganda and increase the continued development and success of our country.” Jude Nyanzi, Founder/ARISE Foundation Uganda.

To provide our program model, curriculum and teacher/coach training to our local partners the Global Team leverages the global soccer community through local events like the upcoming Play With Purpose Cup 2012, being held in partnership with Pacific Sports Complex in Tacoma, WA.
