The STATE of Soccer in WASHINGTON
The goalWA.net 2012 College Previews begin today with a look at the Eastern Washington Eagles of Cheney. This tag line (College Previews) will take you directly to an index of all schools we’ve posted as they come online.
The Eagles finished last in the Big Sky Conference in 2011 but head coach George Hageage believes the school is ready for a rebound this year as his freshmen get a second go with each other. The conference will be tougher than ever as it has added new schools to the mix.
goalWA.net asked Hageage to profile his 2012 Eastern Washington Eagles in the Q & A session below:
goalWA.net: How would you describe your incoming class?
George Hageage: The incoming class was targeted for their ability to fill needs in the back and midfield. With 11 freshman last year, it was important to bring in a couple of JC players to give us some experience. Look for both Jackie Rodgers from PCC and Nicole Mederios from NIC to make and impact quickly.
We are holding tryouts for the last time this year. Next year we will get to the point where we will invite in the returning players we think can continue to help the program and add recruited freshman/JC players to fill the roster. The goal this season is to get through tryouts in a day and a half and quickly evaluate who best fits how we want to play this year.
What are the challenges / opportunities inherent in your 2012 match schedule?
We have a schedule with familiar foes in Gonzaga, Seattle University and Idaho as well as a couple of teams we have not played before in the two schools from North Dakota. Add in Hawaii, Utah St. and new Big Sky member Southern Utah and it makes for a balanced schedule with very competitive games.
Who are 3-4 players you’ll rely on this season for success? Why are they important?
The two goalkeepers we have can be the backbone of a stellar defensive block this fall. Jamie Walker is a senior and Nathalie Schwery both have stepped up this Spring. Lauren Jacobsen will bring experience to the middle of the park and Cassie Black is back as a sophomore ready to add to the 6 goals she scored as a freshman. Pay attention to Brittney Conway as well as she could add a spark from the midfield and/or forward position.
Where do you see your program in terms of competing within your conference?
The goal is to win the Big Sky Conference tournament. To get to the tournament you must finish in the top 4. With the addition of North Dakota and Southern Utah to the conference we now have 10 teams fighting for four spots in what has to be the most competitive, in terms of the limited numbers making the conference tournament, in Division I. It will be a tense and competitive race and we believe we have a shot at a top 4 spot.
