The Seattle Times reports that the Kent-Meridian girls high school soccer program has ended its nine-year losing streak with a 0:0 draw against Kentlake.
“It was like we had just won the World Cup,” K-M defender Sami Bond said of the jubilation that followed the cathartic tie. “I was kind of shocked initially.”
“Kentlake is a good team, and they were just pounding us on goal, especially late in the game,” said 23-year-old coach Chris Wells, a former boys soccer player at K-M and 2007 graduate of the school. “You could tell they didn’t want to be the team to end the streak.”
The Royals are back on their feet again.
“This was one of the proudest moments that I’ve had being on this team,” said Bond, who felt like her team had three legitimate chances to win or tie in the previous three seasons. “We got in a huddle and we did an little chant. Then we took a picture for the yearbook.”
