The STATE of Soccer in WASHINGTON
The new Premier Arena Soccer League club playing out of Soccer First Indoor Sports in Arlington, Washington will be called the “Arlington Aviators” after the moniker flew away with the online vote.
September 11-15 fans were encouraged to vote on goalWA.net for the new side’s name and the final results saw “Aviators” take 40% of the vote. The second and third place votes combined could only match that percentage. “Arsenal” garnered 21% of the total vote while “Reign” managed 19%.
“Thanks to goalwa.net for helping with this process,” said team owner and soccer facility operator Phil Bartlow. ” We’re very happy with the number of name suggestions sent in and the way the online voting went. We’d also like to say thank you to everyone that sent in name suggestions and all that voted.”
The name “Arlington Aviators” was sent in by both Wilson Tsoi and Nick Schiffler. Bartlow says while the margin of victory might have been a bit of a surprise, the eventual winner wasn’t.
“Aviators was the only name that was sent in by more than one person (during the name suggestion period) so it’s fitting that it’s the name that won. As Wilson Tsoi said when he sent the suggestion in, the name Aviators “reflects the nearby airport that’s famous for summer fly-ins,” and he’s absolutely right, the airport is a big part of the identity of the city of Arlington,” said Bartlow. “We are happy to offer both Wilson and Nick four tickets to our inaugural season and we’ll have some other prizes for them when they come in.”
The Aviators will wear the same colors as are featured on the logo of their home facility. “Our team colors will match the Soccer First logo colors which are red and black. The plan is to go with an AC Milan red and black striped home kit and white away kit. We are currently meeting with several sportswear manufacturers and hope to pick one in the next week or so,” says Bartlow.
Next up for the team, which is beginning practices and still recruiting players, is a logo.
“Now that we have a team name we move into the next phase which is coming up with a logo. We have some ideas in mind and have an artist working on those but soccer fans are welcome to send in suggestions there also. Logo ideas can be sent to email@example.com.”
The Arlington Aviators will take the pitch as rivals of the Marysville Ruckus, whose home venue is a mere 5.9 miles down the road.
The club will compete this winter in the Northwest Division of the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL Premier) along with the Ruckus, Kitsap Pumas, Wenatchee Fire, WSA Rapids (Bellingham), Snohomish Skyhawks, South Sound Shock, Bend (Oregon) Steelheaders, and others yet to be officially announced.
