The STATE of Soccer in WASHINGTON

The Western Front highlights new Vikings

The Western Front recently highlighted new Western Washington Vikings Women soccer players in a feature article.

Joana Houplin is the oldest player on the team and it is her last year of eligibility to play for Western. She agreed that there is a lot of young talent. She wants to do well and make it to the NCAA Division II Tournament, which is a goal of hers for her last year. She thinks they have a shot, she said.

“The incoming freshman have had a huge impact,” Houplin said. “We are doing better than I thought we would.”

Houplin said even though they are on the right track, there is still a lot they need to work on if they want to make it to the NCAA Division II tournament and beat their biggest rival, Seattle Pacific University.

Houplin and Sych both agreed their favorite moment on the soccer team was beating SPU on their home field 1-0 in 2010.

“It’s my last year, it’s my last hoorah,” Houplin said. “I want to get in there and win.”

The Vikings are currently second in the GNAC with a 4-1 record, and are 7-2 after nine matches.
