The STATE of Soccer in WASHINGTON
The Premer Arena Soccer League (PASL Premier) Northwest Division is rumbling its engines for the upcoming season.
The division will have a new look, a new schedule format and new teams. The 2012-13 schedule is being released club-by-club. I’ve seen a master copy and in general fans should know that there are only eight matches (four home, four away) and that not all clubs play each other, or even an equal number of times. More on that in a bit.
On Saturday the new Arlington Aviators traveled to Tumwater to scrimmage with the also new Tumwater Pioneers. The flyboys came away with a 9:4 win. www.TumwaterPioneers.com has a photo gallery. The site also recently profiled Pioneers goalkeeper / head coach Matt Stalnik.
The 2012-13 PASL-Premier will consist of nine teams: Kitsap Pumas, Wenatchee Fire, WSA Rapids (Bellingham), South Sound Shock, Tumwater Pioneers, Arlington Aviators, Ruckus FC (Marysville), Snohomish Skyhawks and Cascade (Bend, Oregon).
The Kitsap Pumas are the first club to officially post their schedule. The Pumas will open at home December 1st against the Tumwater Pioneers. The Pumas’ schedule highlights one of the shortcomings of the slate. The Kitsap crew don’t even face the WSA Rapids at all. Last year the two finished 1-2 and the Rapids beat Kitsap in the playoffs. This year they won’t see each other during the 8-match campaign. However, the Pumas will play South Sound and Tumwater twice each.
An internal document from the PASL suggests the division was divided into groups of four that play each other home and away, with Marysville being the ninth club in its own “grouping.” The defending division playoff winner WSA Rapids are placed outside the Pumas’ grouping.
Tentatively the openers are December 1st, when Tumwater is at Kitsap, Arlington is at Snohomish, Marysville is at Cascade, and Wenatchee is at WSA Rapids. South Sound will be the bye club that week and is scheduled to debut December 8th at home versus Cascade.
