Seattle University Women win WAC tournament debut

LOGAN, Utah – Seattle University women’s soccer (9-8-2, 3-3-2 WAC) faced Louisiana Tech (12-5-4, 3-3-2 WAC) in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament and came away with their first WAC Tournament victory, 2-1.

“I was really proud of the team overall,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “I think many individuals made a difference and it was definitely a day where we had a team mentality. We grinded out the win and had a pretty solid second half. Steph[anie Verdoia’s] game-winner was a beautiful goal [with a great assist] from Mary [Hill]. Louisiana Tech was a good, well-organized team; we wanted it today.”
Following a corner kick by Mary Hill (Mercer Island, Wash.), Seattle U scored on an own goal by Louisiana Tech in the third minute to take the early lead, 1-0.

A little over a minute later, in the beginning of the fourth minute, LA Tech’s Laura LeFevour scored her fourth goal of the season on an assist by Paige Dunn to tie the game, 1-1. The score remained tied going into the halftime break.

In the 60th minute, Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) scored the game-winning goal, her fourth game-winner of the season. The header, assisted by Hill, gave the Redhawks the 2-1 victory.
