Golden goal lifts Concordia past Northwest U Eagles

KIRKLAND, Wash. - #2 seed Concordia got a golden goal from Ashley Ames in the first overtime to lift the Cavaliers past #1 seed Northwest U., 2-1, in overtime to win the CCC post season tournament championship and a berth in the NAIA national tournament.

The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation with Northwest holding a lead until Kaylyn Winwood tied the score in the 80th minute with her 17 yarder from the right side. Micah Wenzel had given Northwest the 1-0 lead at the 32:35 mark of the first half as she drilled an 18 yarder past the CU goalkeeper as the ball was cleared out by the CU defense.

Ames’ game winner came with just 1:12 remaining in the first overtime period as she got past an NU defender and put her shot past Eagle goalkeeper Patty Hughes who had come out of the goal. Ames’ shot came from 22 yards out from the right side.

Concordia outshot Northwest 25-14 with 15 of those shots coming in the second half and five in the overtime period. Patty Hughes had 4 saves in goal for Northwest while Tori Talbott had 3 saves for the Cavaliers who finished the season with a 15-2-2 record. Northwest U. completes the season with a 9-9-1 record and the regular season CCC championship, their first since beginning the sport in 2006.
