The STATE of Soccer in WASHINGTON
The readers of goalWA.net have spoken. Actually it was more of a loud yell. The crest they were chanting? It’s the black and white symbol of Bellingham United Football Club, the runaway winner of the voting in the final against the crest of Seattle Sounders FC in the 2013 LOGO WARS.
Nearly 4,400 votes were cast this week and in the final fans of the northern club used social media to easily out-poll the biggest club in the state. See how the finalists got there by viewing these brackets.
While the eventual winner isn’t a huge surprise (BUFC were seeded 5th) the margin of victory (71-29%) is. Perhaps it is just an example of the growing strength of soccer in Washington. Maybe even a bit of a boost to goalWA.net, a website that publishes Hammers news right alongside Sounders news. A place where there are no “small clubs,” only “our clubs.” Readership in February 2013 is up nearly 60% over the same time last year. This will be the second straight record viewership month for the website, and outdoor soccer season has yet to even begin.
The Hammers have a logo that is both simple and profound. Both dynamic and yet without color. “The crest was made to represent Mount Baker and Bellingham Bay, two of the most iconic symbols of the area,” club owner Jeff McIntyre tells goalWA.net. “The black and white were chosen because they represent the “straight forward” mentality that we have employed throughout the club.”
McIntyre reached out to nearby Ferndale to hone the final design of the Hammers logo. Ted Denessen of TNT Signs & Promotional Products Inc. took his concept and made the final product. “Jeff had a logo worked up that wasn’t in the crest format,” Ted says. “I used parts of this logo and put it together into the current logo.”
“I am still very happy with the design, it is awesome to see it all around town, plus I believe it is the first logo design I worked on that people actually got tattooed on themselves.”
Bellingham United was recognized by goalWA.net as the top soccer story of 2012 in the state, in part thanks to the local support and football club culture growing outside of Seattle. It is that support that lifted the Hammers logo to the top.
“We have great hometown support in Bellingham,” Denessen explains.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for our logo. As a graphic designer it is nice to win a competition like this, especially going up against the big boys like the Sounders in the final. There were a lot of great logos in the competition, so to come out on top is exciting. GO HAMMERS!”
