BREMERTON, WA — The first-place Victoria Highlanders beat the Kitsap Pumas on Sunday afternoon at Gordon Field putting in serious doubt that the home club will earn a PDL playoff spot.
If they don’t get there, it would be the first time ever the Pumas would not see the post-season after going in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. In 2011 Kitsap won the PDL National Championship. This season all of the close matches have not gone Kitsap’s way.
Neil Shaffer was again the man on the score sheet for the Pumas. His goal was countered by scores from Brett Levis and the winner from the noggin of Victoria’s Jordie Hughes.
The Pumas slumped to a record of 1-4-5 after nine matches played while the Highlanders are riding high at 7-1-1 and retake first place in the Northwest Division 22 points to 20 over the Portland Timbers U-23′s.
While the Highlanders hope to continue strong into a playoff run the Pumas are left to consider how they want to get ready for next season by using their remaining matches to decide roster spots and needs. If they don’t get the right results from other clubs and win out, this year will be a wash.
In December 2012 the Pumas reported that the playoff system in the Northwest would be first place going directly to the Conference, while finishers two and three would play for the other spot. Right now Kitsap sits fifth on eight points.
The Pumas are still very much alive to defend their Ruffneck Cup title. Kitsap is in second place in the Puget Sound Derby race and has three home cup matches in a row after facing North Sound in Edmonds this week.
