crossfire foundationEDMONDS, WA — Washington Crossfire scored a 2:1 win over the North Sound SeaWolves on Friday night at Edmonds Stadium. The win keeps the slim hopes for Washington alive in the PDL Northwest playoff race.

Crossfire now stands at 15 points, three behind the Vancouver Whitecaps U23, who currently hold the third and final playoff spot. Crossfire beat the Caps 2:0 earlier this year. Now they travel to BC this Sunday July 14 for a final meeting. A Crossfire win on Sunday would put them in a tie with Vancouver. The Redmond club would still need help, though. The Whitecaps U23′s have a final match next week at North Sound. Meanwhile, the Sounders U23′s have 15 points and two matches left: at Kitsap tonight, and at Portland next week.

Last night the Whitecaps U23′s drew 1:1 with the Timbers U23′s. That result officially eliminated the Kitsap Pumas from playoff contention. The Pumas will try to salvage their season tonight by winning the Ruffneck Cup for bragging rights among Puget Sound clubs.

In Friday’s match at Edmonds Stadium Andy Thoma gave Crossfire a 23rd-minute lead. Brady Ballew came through again for the SeaWolves just before halftime, scoring on an assist from Daniel Van Vleet. The Washington winner came in the 68th minute from Matthew Poplawksi.

  1. Vancouver has a +4 goal differential, while Crossfire has -2 and Sounders U23 has -5. No way Crossfire is going to score 6 goals on Vancouver to tie in the standings. Crossfire has scored 6 or more twice in their history and that was vs Spokane and Abbottsford in 2010.

Sounders U23 are 9 goals behind Vancouver. And they play at Kitsap and Portland. Not going to happen.

  2. Here are the PDL tiebreakers.

    Standings tiebreakers
The breaking of ties in the final standings, playoffs and finals is accomplished by applying the following criteria, in order of importance:

    1. Head-to-head record based on total points in League games. (A,B)
    2. Total wins in League games.
    3. Goal difference in League games. If number of games is unequal, the Game Average(C) will be used.
    4. Goals scored in League games.
    5. Total points within smallest group(D). If number of games is unequal, then point percentage(E) will be used.
    6. Ranking based on points earned against top four group finishers. This tiebreaker will not be used if four (4) or fewer teams comprise the group. If number of games is unequal, then point percentage applies.
    7. Point percentage outside / smallest division or conference in League games.
    8. Total points in all regular season and Open Cup qualifying games combined. If number of games is unequal, then point percentage applies.
    9. FIFA Fair Play – Team with fewest disciplinary points in League games. (If number of games is unequal, points will be divided by games played to arrive at a common basis for comparison.)
    10. Lottery conducted by USL.

    A. League games refer solely to games that count towards the regular season standings.
    B. Should more than two (2) teams involved have played each other an unequal number of times, this tiebreaker will be skipped.
    C. Game Average = Tie Breaker / number of games played (i.e. goals scored / number of games played).
    D. Grouping = term used to describe the primary unit in which a team competes (i.e. Southwest Division).
    E. Point Percentage = number of total points earned / maximum possible points (3 per game)

    • so then based on head-to-head, right now Crossfire has a win vs Vancouver. A 2nd win Sunday then they hold the tie breaker with 1 Vancouver match left.

Sounders split with Vancouver (1-0 win and a 4-2 loss). Sounders has 2wins and a draw vs Crossfire.

Vancouver is missing many of their Residency U18 players as they are in Texas this weekend according to their match recap vs Portland last night. Crossfire looks good at stealing a win up north. ‘Caps are on the road next week at North Sound.
