The STATE of Soccer in WASHINGTON
by David Falk
The Evergreen Premier League is excited to announce that we have now received 9 official applications by clubs across the state of Washington. The latest to submit their desire to join the EPLWA are the Men of WestSound FC, out of Silverdale. Earlier this week applications were sent from clubs in Spokane and Lewis County (Centralia / Chehalis.)
“Our team has been looking for a competitive system to play in this summer and has been playing friendlies against other like clubs. This league is exactly the movement we were hoping for to provide talented players a platform within a community to play and continue to enjoy the game at a competitive level,” said a comment on the WestSound FC application.
The EPLWA has been keeping track of the WSFC Men for a few weeks now. Via goalWA.net we heard of their founding (see also this club website story.) Then we watched for scores as they traveled to Bellingham to play the BUFC Reserves and in-turn also hosted the Hammers Reserves near Silverdale. We caught photos of the club in action this summer, too.
In a story on the WSFC website, Men’s club founder Kevin Skinner said recently:
“I have always thought that the one thing lacking in this country as soccer has developed, is a place for players to play once they are done at U18. The choices are then college – or to stop playing basically. Even if you play college, if you do not make it into a pro set-up then its the same problem. There is the Pumas and the PDL league here, but any kids who play for them before completing college immediately lose their eligibility. There are a bunch of players like myself who have played at a high level overseas and would like to continue to play at a decent level like the PDL but have full-time jobs that pay much better than that, so we cannot give up the time and commitment that those clubs ask for – for the little or no compensation you receive.”
Eight of the (now) nine clubs who have applied to the EPLWA have chosen to announce their town / area publicly. Those eight are: Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Wenatchee, Pasco / Tri-Cities, Lewis County / Centralia, Spokane, and Silverdale.
The Evergreen Premier League earlier announced it was speeding up the process to join the league due to the high demand.
