The STATE of Soccer in WASHINGTON
by David Falk
VANCOUVER, WA - The Evergreen Premier League and its clubs say they are going to listen to their supporters, and that promise was put into action in a very big way today as the Vancouver Washington EPLWA club has set a new course with a new name after meeting with fans last week. Going forward the club will be known as the “Victory.”
“We had a very productive meeting (last week) with local fans and with members of the Northern Alliance,” says Vancouver Victory FC founder and owner Barrett Goddard. “There was consensus that ‘Venom’ did not sound local enough…did not have much of anything to do with Vancouver.” So, the club listened to the input and looked into the city’s history. They ended up with a name that keeps the “V” and honors the “Victory Ships” built at Vancouver’s Ryan Point by Kaiser Shipyards as a huge part of the American effort in World War II.
The club has further clarified that its signature color will be light blue, with kits similar in color to those worn by Manchester City, Lazio and Sporting KC.
The new course requires a new Facebook address as well: www.facebook.com/VancouverVictoryFC.
“Our meeting with supporters was exciting, and full of ideas,” Goddard says. “We listened and hope going forward we can all come together to support and enjoy Vancouver FC soccer.”
The Northern Alliance was formed as a Portland Timbers FC supporters group for Southwest Washington. They also support the Clark College Penguins in NWAACC soccer. The Victory hope they can eventually earn the support of the group, which brings their own unique, ‘football club’ atmosphere to matches.
In the press release announcing Vancouver as the 8th and final club into the Evergreen Premier League for 2014 the side initially had picked ‘Venom’ as its nickname.
