The STATE of Soccer in WASHINGTON
Four Washington State players (birth year 1999) have been invited to the U14 GNT camp this week in Carson, CA. Jojo Harber (Forward) and Zoe Milburn (Defender) from Eastside FC G’98 Red- the GU14 US Youth Soccer National Championship team- and Anna Smith (GK) and Kelsey Turnbow (Forward) from Crossfire ’98 ECNL- the 6th place team in GU14 ECNL National Championships.
Three from WA off to U-17 camp in Florida: Washington State players Lauren Rood, Kelcie Hedge and Maddie Schultz invited to U-17 Nats camp (read story here.)
These four players have been identified through many different avenues: 1999 birth year invitees to the US Soccer Training Centers, the US Club id2 program events, Washington State Youth Soccer Elite Player Development (EPD) program and Regional/National Olympic Development Program (ODP) camps. As well as, ECNL events and highly selective/competitive tournaments such as Surf Cup.
For an example of the type of exposure these players get from their teams, in August, when the Eastside FC G’98 Red (The 2013 GU14 US Youth Soccer National Champions) played DeAnza ’98 ECNL (The 2013 GU14 ECNL National Champions) to a 1-1 tie at Surf Cup, the U14 Girls’ National Team coach, April Kater, was on the sidelines watching the game intently. In that match up, where the sidelines were packed four rows deep with spectators and college coaches, Jojo Harber scored EFC G’98 Red’s only goal on a beautiful direct free-kick and Zoe Milburn almost scored in the last few seconds of the game, showing her unmatched speed in this age group! Also, during the US Youth Soocer GU14 National Championship Series in KS in July, Jojo Harber was awarded the “Golden Ball” trophy for being the most prolific goal scorer of the GU14 age group and also was selected to the tournament’s “Best 11″ team along with EFC G’98 Red teammate, Kaylene Pang- Issaquah High School freshman varsity player.
These four U14 Girls’ National team camp bound players and their teammates represent the very high level of talent that Washington state has in this 1999 birth year age group. Plus, this goes to show that whether a girl plays on a RCL team or an ECNL team, exposure and identification of top players can happen in many different ways.
