The North American Soccer League Seattle Sounders had a successful debut in 1974, though the club was edged out of a playoff spot.

John Rowlands and David Butler led the side with 10 goals each. Rowlands added in 8 assists.

Jimmy Gabriel, (top photo) who some now call “Mr. Sounder,” became the spiritual leader of the team in year one, and would go on to make a local life intertwined with Seattle soccer and the various versions of the club.
