Women’s Soccer Update: Hope Solo happy, Sounders Women fans stay put, new names for new Seattle club

SEATTLE, Wash. – The off-season news for professional women’s soccer in Seattle keeps bubbling as recent developments have fans talking about players, coaches, teams, names…and even themselves.

SounderatHeart.com has revealed that along with “Sirens,” the new Seattle women’s club is also considering “Reign,” and simply “Seattle FC.” In their poll “Sirens” is winning the popular vote so far. Jeremiah Oshan asks if Seattle is a big enough market for two teams.

Sounders Women on the offensive

The Sounders Women have not indicated yet whether they will start paying players as a pro side or remain an amateur outfit. The W-League would likely accommodate either choice. However, the side did issue a few statements aimed at keeping the fans they’ve got in regards to the new competitor in town.

Jet City Aux made this banner after the Sounders Women’s W-League campaign. Who knew then that it would have a double meaning, as a new Seattle team arrives this winter in a new pro league set to open in spring 2013.

Sounders FC GM Adrian Hanauer said via SoundersWomen.com: “Seattle Sounders FC is in support of all soccer in Puget Sound.   We are pleased with our affiliation with the Sounders Women’s team and our relationship with them is strong and in great standing.   They are committed to excellence just like Sounders FC.  Following the success of the 2012 Sounders Women, we hope fans will continue to support the rave green.”

The Sounders Women’s organized supporters said this:  The Jet City Auxiliary wishes Mr. Predmore and his new team/league all the best. However, our allegiances lie unwavering and in full support of the Sounders Women.  Members of the JCA who’d like to support the new team may do so on their own accord, but the Aux will not support the new team in an official capacity.

I’ve attached a photo taken last season at SeaTac Airport when our girls returned from the Western Conference Final.  Moments like these do not happen with supporters who sway from club to club.  We love these girls and all those who don the rave green; we simply just can’t get enough.

To all our girls who decide to play in this new league: we wish the best of luck.

To those who return to the Sounders: the Aux will be behind the west goal bringing it bigger and better in 2013!

Meanwhile the likely starting goalkeeper for one of the Seattle teams, Hope Solo, is in Portland tonight for a Women’s National Team friendly where she said:

Mitalas honored

The Seattle Times recently named it’s All-Area girls soccer team of the year. Sounders Women Director of Community Relations, Teddy Mitalas, was named the Coach of the Year for his work at Holy Names Academy.
