PORTLAND, OR — Seattle Reign FC played their first match against Portland Thorns FC on Sunday afternoon April 21 in the Rose City. The National Women’s Soccer League has hopes the two sides can catch some of the magic of the Major League Soccer Sounders-Timbers rivalry. So far, so good. (Equalizer Soccer match report here.)
The Thorns FC opened the scoring with a goal from defender Marian Dougherty in the 45th minute and then doubled their lead in the 52nd minute as forward Christine Sinclair fed forward Alex Morgan for the goal and a 2-0 advantage. The Reign FC would respond in the 74th minute as midfielder Jessica Fishlock pulled back a goal to cut the lead to 2:1 but it was not enough as the Thorns held on for the victory. (See Thorns match report here.)
The Thorns out-shot the Reign 11-7.
Seattle is now 0-1-1 on the season while Portland improves to 1-0-1 with their first-ever NWSL triumph.
The Reign are at FC Kansas City on Friday April 26 before hosting the same club on May 4 in their first home match of the season.
