Reign fall in Portland before over 16,000 fans (Match Replay Video)

reignfc-croppedPORTLAND, OR — Seattle Reign FC played their first match against  Portland Thorns FC on Sunday afternoon April 21 in the Rose City. The National Women’s Soccer League has hopes the two sides can catch some of the magic of the Major League Soccer Sounders-Timbers rivalry. So far, so good. (Equalizer Soccer match report here.)

The Thorns FC opened the scoring with a goal from defender Marian Dougherty in the 45th minute and then doubled their lead in the 52nd minute as forward Christine Sinclair fed forward Alex Morgan for the goal and a 2-0 advantage. The Reign FC would respond in the 74th minute as midfielder Jessica Fishlock pulled back a goal to cut the lead to 2:1 but it was not enough as the Thorns held on for the victory. 1. Wow 16K! impressive. I think its a big mistake that the teams in this leagues are not more affiliated with the MLS teams in the same city… IT will hurt the future viability of the league. No doubt.

    • I don’t think there was a line of MLS teams wanting to take on the job. It’s a shame, but that’s where most of the MLS is at right now. Not interested. Maybe after this they’ll see what a mistake it was for holding out. Meanwhile the women’s game have a league of eight owners who believe in them. That’s better than a phantom league of phantom MLS support.

  3. 16000, talk to me in 2 months. It will be 1600 or 16, women’s soccer at the pro level is not ever going to happen and be successful. It’s like cold maple syrup compared to mens.

  4. The Thorns have over 8,000 season tickets, so I am guessing they are set for this year, Bob. Long term any soccer league is a gamble of sorts.
