WEST SEATTLE, WA— Emerald City FC and AC Seattle hooked up in a real thriller on Thursday night at Sealth Stadium in West Seattle. In the end it was the blue and green that edged the Italian-stocked AC Seattle on a worthy strike from Casey Berrier in the late going, 2:1. A rowdy crowd of around 200 appreciated the spectacle playing out in front of them.
Emerald City dominated the first half both physically and technically, controlling the pace and coming up with several good scoring chances. Finally they got one in when a group of players met in the box and eventually an own goal was credited to AC Seattle in the 35th minute. Casey Berrier had been in the center of the mob for ECFC.
AC Seattle drew level in the 56th on a nice bit of passing in the box that was finished with the right foot on a half-volley by Valentina Giacinti. Possession had been building for AC Seattle, who came out after the break with a revised structure and a renewed sense of spirit.
ACS could have taken the lead during their improved run of play. Only a few minutes after they drew level ECFC goalkeeper Liz Ruiz made a spectacular one-handed tip save on a ball destined for the Emerald City net.
It all came down to the last stages and Casey Berrier’s long bomb that sailed into the far top corner of the AC Seattle goal after a proficient build-up. The shot electrified the crowd and capped a hard-fought night of soccer. The score was officially recorded as coming in the 88th minute.
After the match both coaches (see video) agreed on Emerald City’s excellent first half. Niki Taylor spoke of being pleased with her side’s technical ability and form. Antonio Cincotta complimented his foe on their physical prowess and said the match was a beautiful display of women’s soccer.
For her part, goalscorer Casey Barrier was pleased with her shot, which she directed as planned into the left upper “v” of the AC Seattle goal.
Liz Ruiz was at the top of her game in goal for Emerald City.
Ilaria Leoni kept AC Seattle in the match with numerous timely saves.
