SEATTLE, WA – July 26, 2013 – Seattle Reign FC scored four goals for the first time this season as they beat the Chicago Red Stars 4 – 1 at the Moda Health Pitch at Starfire Sports. Seattle (5-10-3, 18 pts.) midfielder Megan Rapinoe tallied five points in the match on two goals and one assist.

Seattle got on the scoreboard first with a free kick by Rapinoe in the 6th minute. Rapinoe hit a low-driven shot that went right by the diving Chicago Red Stars (6-7-4, 22 pts.) goalkeeper, Erin McLeod. The goal was Rapinoe’s third of the season.

Seattle didn’t wait much longer to net their second of the night, as defender Kaylyn Kyle converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute. The PK was called as Kyle’s header attempt on goal was hit down by Adirana Leon’s arm. The header came from a Rapinoe corner kick and was the third time the pair connected for an attempt on goal. Kyle stepped up to the penalty and hit it past a McLeod as she dove to her right. The goal was Kyle’s second of the season, with both goals coming off penalty kicks.

Reign FC continued their scoring spree as Rapinoe netted her second goal and Seattle’s third of the match in the 68th minute. Rapinoe stole an errant back pass from a Chicago defender and placed a shot past McLeod.

Seattle was well on their way to a victory and looked as if they were about to get their first shutout of the season.

That hope was reaffirmed in the 73rd minute when Reign FC’s goalkeeper Hope Solo made a save off Chicago’s Jen Hoy penalty kick. The ball was deflected off service into the box and hit the hand of defender Lauren Barnes. The penalty was Seattle’s sixth conceded this season, a league high.

Unfortunately, Reign FC could not hold onto the clean sheet, as Hoy was able to get on to a Lori Chalupny through ball one minute after the penalty save. Hoy put it past a diving Solo to net Chicago’s only goal of the game and her first of the season.

Seattle put the match away with its fourth goal of the match, scored by substitute Liz Bogus in the 82nd minute. Bogus received a ball on the right side of the field from a 60- yard aerial pass from Megan Rapinoe. Bogus settled it beautifully and dribbled at McLeod before hitting it past the diving goalkeeper and into the left side netting, scoring her first goal of the season.

The win keeps Seattle’s playoff hopes alive as they move to within nine points of the Western New York Flash, who sit in the fourth and final playoff spot on 27 points. If Seattle is able to win out while WNY, Chicago and Boston falter down the stretch, the fourth spot could open up for Reign FC.

Seattle now hits the road for their final away matches of the season. The three-match trip will begin in Chicago on Saturday, August 3 and will conclude on the east coast with games against the Western New York Flash on August 7 and the Washington Spirit on August 10. The match against the Washington Spirit will be aired nationally on the FOX Soccer Channel.

Seattle will then return home for their final home match of the season on Saturday, August 17 as they face Portland Thorns FC in a game that could potentially hold huge playoff implications. The match is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. at the Moda Health Pitch at Starfire Stadium.

Tickets for the Portland match are available at ReignFC.com.
