kjohnsonPumasx200BREMERTON, WA — You don’t often see a seven-goal explosion by one team in a single quarter. It is even more rare to see five of those goals scored by one guy. It happened on December 21st at the Olympic Soccer and Sports Center in Bremerton as the Kitsap Pumas blasted the WSA Rapids 12:5. The Pumas scored seven goals in the third quarter to break away from a 3:3 halftime draw. Kyle Johnson went into a zone all his own, scoring five of those. For his performance Johnson is this week’s goalWA.net PASL NW Player of the Week.

“Kyle was absolutely incredible this weekend,” says Kitsap head coach James Ritchie of the Bremerton native’s display.

“His performance was great throughout the match. But, his third quarter is the most amazing thing I have seen with our indoor team. The goals all required a lot of work and they were all very different. Each goal required a high level of skill and Kyle showed his class in each.”

Pumas supporters posted about the accomplishment this way:

cropped-cropped-georgebigwhite.jpgKyle Johnson scored 3 goals in under 3 minutes in the 3rd to open up a 6-3 lead. His 5 goals in the quarter (in a 9 minute span) were from nearly impossible angles including a back heel flip in while looking away from the goal. It was kinda like the old Larry Bird-Michael Jordon McDonald’s commercials from the early ’90s (off the scoreboard nothing but net, etc). Along the end board into the far corner; along the side board into the upper far corner; back heel flip in along the end board somehow past the keeper; a deflected tip-in in front of the goal off of a shot on a power play.

“Kyle has been solid all season and is fun to watch play,” Ritchie continues. “He is a very talented player and we always expect a high level from him. We are very pleased to have Kyle on the team.”

Johnson began his career with the Pumas back in 2009 out of the University of Puget Sound.
