Reign FC National Team allocations revealed, Gig Harbor’s Cox listed by USA

reignfc-croppedSEATTLE, WA — (Reign FC Facebook post) The NWSL has announced the list of National Team allocated players for the 2014 season. A total of 50 allocated National Team players will be participating in the upcoming season with 26 Americans, 16 Canadians and eight Mexicans.

Of the 50, Seattle Reign will have six allocated players, including four Americans (Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe, Sydney Leroux and Stephanie Cox), one Canadian (Carmelina Moscato), and one Mexican (Arianna Romero).

Steph Cox is one of five new American allocated players. The defender returned for Seattle late in the 2013 NWSL season after missing most of the year due to pregnancy leave. Steph has the distinction of being the only new American allocated player that played in the NWSL in 2013. Cox also made her return to the USWNT at the end of 2013, making one start in the USWNT’s last game of the year, a 4-1 win against Brazil.

Ari Romero is the only allocated player that wasn’t previously on Reign FC’s roster, and she is also the team’s only Mexican International. The Nebraska Cornhusker finished her collegiate career in 2013 with 77 appearances, two goals, seven assists, and 11 total points. Ari started in all 77 games that she played in during her four years at Nebraska. Following her senior year in 2013, Romero was named Second Team NSCAA All-American and Big Ten Defender of the Year. The defender spent time with the Mexican U-20 squad before being called up to the National Team in 2011. Romero was called up again in September 2013 for a friendly against the USWNT where she started and played the full 90.

Two defenders from Reign FC’s 2013 squad – Jenny Ruiz, a Mexican allocated player and Emily Zurrer, a Canadian allocated player – will not be returning to Reign FC for the upcoming season. Jenny Ruiz was not selected for allocation by the Mexican Federation, while Zurrer elected to play outside the NWSL and join Swedish side Jitex BK.

We would like to welcome Ari to the club and congratulate all six of Reign FC’s allocated players for the 2014 NWSL season!
