SEATTLE (May 6, 2014) – Seattle Reign FC forward Sydney Leroux has been voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 4 of the 2014 NWSL season.
Leroux, who turns 24-years-old on Wednesday, scored the game-winning goal – her first goal of the season – in the second match of a two-game road trip last week as Reign FC defeated Sky Blue FC 2-0 on Wednesday, April 30 at Yurcak Field and then bested the Washington Spirit 2-1 on Saturday, May 3 at Maureen Hendricks Field.
On Saturday, the Los Angeles, Calif. native slotted a shot past Spirit goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris following a one-on-one battle with defender Tori Huster. Subsequently, she had a chance for her second in the 82nd minute but placed her header from a corner just wide of the goal.
“I’m really really happy for Syd,” said head coach and general manager Laura Harvey following the match. “She deserved that one. Her work rate has been remarkable, and it was only a matter of time until she scored.”
The U.S. Women’s National Team member has started and played in all five games this season for Reign FC, who are in first place in the league with a 5-0-0 record and 15 points.
Leroux, who was also named NWSL Player of the Week for Weeks 4 and 13 in 2013, becomes the first player to win the accolade three times.
This marks the first time this season and third-time overall that a Seattle player has been voted NWSL Player of the Week, joining midfielders Jessica Fishlock and Megan Rapinoe who received the award in 2013.
The Seattle Reign FC will return to action Saturday, May 10, at 10 p.m. ET against Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park in Portland, Ore.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
