Shadow claim first home win at expense of WestSound

SPOKANE, WA—Frustrated most of the night by a WestSound side that took points off league-leading Bellingham twice, the Shadow finally broke through in the 67th minute of the contest at Spokane Falls CC Saturday evening when Graison Le found Nick Hamer for what stood as the winning tally in front of 623 fans for the 1-0 win.

Nick Hamer.

(Spokane Match Report / Release) The winning goal was created when Mike Ramos (Seattle U/University HS) slipped the balled to Le (Gonzaga U/Coeur d’Alene HS) in the left corner. Past his defender, the nifty little midfielder fired a los ball to the front of the six where Nick Hamer (Gonzaga U/Mead HS) slid in to knock it past the onrushing goalkeeper Jordan Hadden. (View video here.)

The first half of the match was a relative stalemate between the two sides, though the visitors nearly took the lead nine minutes in when Enrique Hidalgo delivered a low cross through the six that was very tantalizing, but unable to find anyone for the finish.

Things picked up in the second half as the Shadow took advantage of the visitors, who lost 5-2 in Yakima the night before. Five minutes into the half Ramos nearly put the Shadow in front from 15 yards out on the left side. Eight minutes later Nick Hamer broke through up the middle but was unable to find the back of the net.

The Shadow nearly locked things up just two minutes after the goal when Matt Bray(Whitworth / Ferris) fired a 16 yard effort that narrowly missed the left post. Jacob Weaver(Northwest U/Northwest Christian HS) made a great run up the left in the 75th and from near the endline sent a ball inside that was snared by Hadden to prevent any danger.

Three minutes later Hamer nearly stunned everyone in attendance. A long ball over the top into space on the right allowed him to chase the ball down. He got to it just in time to keep it from going out of play and in a desperation attempt to deliver a cross before the ball went over the line, he sent it into the area. Eyes widened as the cross floated over the keeper and nearly dropped into the far side netting of the goal.

In the final 10 minutes Micah Weller (Cheney HS) almost clinched the contest with a shot that was denied by the crossbar.

In the final moments WestSound nearly stole a draw out of the affair, but Colin Ralston’seffort landed on top of the goal, allowing the Shadow to come away with their first home victory. They won the previous meeting on the road 3-0.
