WALLA WALLA, WA – (school release) A pressing attack by visiting Linfield College kept Haley Case busy all afternoon as the Whitman College goalkeeper registered seven saves during the host Missionaries’ 1-0 loss to the Wildcats in Northwest Conference women’s soccer action at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

Case racked up six of her saves in the second half as Whitman (7-7-2, 5-5-2 NWC) searched for the equalizer after Linfield (11-3, 8-3) had opened the scoring early in the first half.
The Wildcats’ Ellie Schmidt had a nice look at the goal in the 13th minute and buried a shot into the bottom right to provide the visitors with a one-goal lead.
Whitman chased after the deficit the rest of the game but Linfield maintained a healthy possession advantage to keep the Missionaries attack at bay. The Wildcats finished with an 18-4 edge in shots, lightening the load on a goalkeeper, Laurel Huth, clinging to a narrow lead.
Late in the game Whitman began to flip the field with consistent possession deep in its attacking third. Three times in the final eight minutes the Missionaries gained corner kick chances but the tying goal remained elusive.
Whitman had a pair of scoring chances in the first half with the game still scoreless but Huth came up with saves on Brianna Brown’s and Lena de Guzman’s shots. One minute after Huth’s save off de Guzman, Schmidt notched the eventual game-winner.
Next up for the Missionaries is a conference match-up against visiting Pacific (Ore.) University on Sunday, Oct. 26 at noon. Whitman’s four seniors will be recognized in a brief ceremony prior to kickoff.
