SEATTLE, WA – (GoSeattleU.com) Seattle University men’s soccer (11-5-3) and Bakersfield (10-7-4) played to a 1-1 tie through two regulation periods and two overtimes before the match ultimately went into penalty kicks. The Roadrunners would advance on penalty kicks, 4-3, to find a place in the Western Athletic Conference semifinals.
Dale Garvey shot the match and shares a gallery at Facebook.com/goalWA.
“I can’t fault my guys for effort, attitude, or commitment,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “But this is sports and that’s how it works. The shot that hit the post – if it had moved just a quarter of an inch, it might’ve slipped in. We practiced penalty kicks all week but we need to score more than one goal to win. Kudos to Bakersfield – to play yesterday and then to play another 110 minutes, hats off to them.”
The Redhawks’ best early chance came in the 20th minute as Brady Ballew’s (Marysville, Wash.) shot hit the right post, just narrowly missing the inside of the net.
Christian Duarte would net the first goal for Bakersfield in the 23rd minute off a cross by Julian Zamora to give CSUB the early 1-0 lead through halftime.
Tying it up in the 58th minute, Kyle Bjornethun (Snohomish, Wash.) headed in a perfectly placed ball off a Ian Hines-Ike (Littleton, Colo.) free kick resulting from a Bakersfield yellow card.
Each team had some of their best chances in the late second half as Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.) headed the ball in the 82nd minute, the ball sailing just wide right. Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) came up with a huge save on David Velasquez’s back-to-back shots in the 85th minute.
Seattle U dominated offensive possession in the first overtime period while Bakersfield played the aggressor in the second as the score remained tied, heading into penalty kicks to decide the winner.
Hines-Ike put the Redhawks up, 1-0, in penalty kicks before Hugo Vinales tied the tally with the fourth of 10 total between the two teams. Alex Roldan (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and Haddadi also put away PK’s, but a set of Redhawk misses would set up Edan Mendoza for the PK that would advance the Roadrunners to the finals.
Ballew and Roldan led the Redhawks with four shots apiece while Duarte led the Roadrunners with five.
In goal, Haworth made seven saves for the Redhawks while Nicolas Clever made six. Anthony Perez entered in goal for CSUB for the PK shootout.
Seattle U’s season ends with the loss in the semifinals as they lose five seniors – Ballew, Race Sciabica (Bellevue, Wash.), Kyle Silva (Winnipeg, Manitoba), John Mau (Delafield, Wisc.), and Chase Hanson (Kent, Wash.). They will look to reload and return to the WAC tournament in 2015.
