Tough day in Kirkland: Northwest Eagles drop two title matches

Sports, just like life, can often deal us difficult days. Saturday was one of those days for the Eagles of Northwest University. Excited to host not one but two Cascade Collegiate Conference Soccer Finals, the Kirkland crew found themselves on the short end of a 1-0 loss to #3-ranked Concordia Portland (Women) and a 2-1 overtime loss to Corban (Men.)

Concordia Wins CCC Championships Title

KIRKLAND, WA – Martha Heaps scored the lone goal and game winner for No. 3 ranked Concordia (Ore.) as they defeated No. 23 Northwest University, 1-0, in the CCC Championships title game to win the tournament and a berth in the 2014 NAIA Nationals Championships. Concordia was the No. 2 seed and Northwest U the No. 1 seed in the CCC tournament.

Heaps’ goal came in the 48th minute as she took a through ball from teammate Erin Huisingh and put her hard shot on the ground just past NU goalkeeper, Patty Hughes in the lower right corner of the goal after it was deflected by an NU defender.

Concordia controlled possession for most of the game finishing with 14 shots while limiting Northwest U to 5. CU had 6 corners to the Eagles’ 3. Patty Hughes had 7 saves in goal for Northwest U while Concordia’s Olivia Brock came up with 2 saves for the Cavaliers.

Concordia finishes the regular season with an overall record of 16-1-2 while Northwest completes their season with an 11-6-2 overall record.

Corban Golden Goal Captures CCC Championships Title

KIRKLAND, WA – Arsenio Walker scored the golden goal 5:29 into overtime as Corban edged Northwest University, 2-1, to win the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships final this afternoon and advance to the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championships beginning Saturday, November 22. Corban finishes their season with a 12-7-1 record while Northwest U completes the year at 15-5.

Northwest U scored first as Todd Siedenburg scored on a penalty kick in the 6th minute to put the Eagles up 1-0. Corban score the equalizer at the 37:39 mark when Eliso Santana finished with a hard shot past the NU goalkeeper off a pass and assist from Daniel Fredrickson.

Walker then scored the game winner in the 96th minute as he took James Williamson’s cross through the box and one touch finished into the lower right corner of the goal.

Steve Mason earned the win for Corban making 5 saves in goal while Daniel Christenson saved 6 Corban shots on goal.
