The Tacoma Stars needed really good goalkeeping to preserve their undefeated season and they got it on Saturday night January 17 as Aaron Anderson (first half) and Chris Kintz (second half) combined to hold the Arlington Aviators to one goal. The home Aviators led 1-0 at the half thanks to a great performance by their goalkeeper Erik Cruz, but the Stars kept it at one goal and then solved Cruz in the second half to post a 5-1 victory. For their dual performances, one night after both played in the MASL for the Stars against San Diego, Anderson and Kintz are the Western Indoor Soccer League Players of the Week.
Chris Kintz followed Anderson in goal for the second half in Arlington. He went in with direction. “My mindset was to set up their defenders in positions when they high pressed me so that we could attack 4 v 5 or 5 v 3. Darren (Sawatzky, Tacoma head coach) wanted to get the ball moving faster out of the back and for me to play as high as possible.”
Just one night earlier in the “big house” at the ShoWare Center, Kintz had also come in to play in the second half.
“It was great to play back to back nights. It’s a schedule that I’ve delt with before in the Pasl-Pro having a quick turn-around with double headers. I was feeling really fresh coming off a good training last Wednesday going into Friday’s big game in the MASL. That momentum carried into Saturday’s game in the WISL and getting three points on the road.”
Kintz made 10 saves in the second half as the Stars rallied for the win. Anderson made 13 in the first half.
Aaron Anderson has led the WISL in goalkeeping all season long, posting the lowest goals against average of continual starters. Anderson might be a quiet presence in goal, but his saves and leadership speak loudly. “As a goalkeeper ! am usually quiet unless the obvious is out of order, then I speak up. I let my players just play and I adjust to the situation as it plays out,” he says.
Aaron is enjoying the ride the Stars are taking their fans on in the WISL. I am very excited about the Stars returning,” Anderson says. “Especially with the ownership and men behind the scenes. They want nothing but the best for the club, players, fans and city.”
