SEATTLE, WA— (club release) Seattle Reign FC announced today that the club has re-signed defender Stephanie Cox. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Steph’s performances for Reign FC last season were exceptional and we are thrilled that she will be back with the club,” Reign FC general manager and head coach Laura Harvey said. “She understands what we want from our players and her experience and expertise are something that our younger players look up to.”
In June 2013, Cox signed with Reign FC midway through Seattle’s first season. Returning to professional soccer following the birth of her first child, she made four appearances in the team’s inaugural campaign.
Prior to the start of the 2014 season, Stephanie became an allocated player alongside fellow U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) teammates Megan Rapinoe, Sydney Leroux and Hope Solo.
Last season Cox made 21 appearances, 20 starts, and recorded 1776 minutes. Cox was a key member of a dynamic backline that allowed a league-low 20 goals (0.83 goals-against-average) on route to winning the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Shield with the best regular season record. Cox was also voted onto the NWSL Second XI.
U.S. Soccer has elected not to allocate Cox for the 2015 season, even though she was a member of the USWNT squad during World Cup qualifying. The Elk Grove, Calif. native began playing for the USWNT in 2006 and has amassed 89 career caps. Cox won a gold medal with the USWNT at the 2008 Olympics in China. In addition, she picked up a silver medal in the 2011 World Cup and a bronze medal in the 2007 World Cup.
Reign FC will open the 2015 season at home on Sunday, April 12 against Abby Wambach and the Western New York Flash. Season ticket packages for Seattle’s upcoming season start at just $195. Fans looking to purchase tickets can call (855) REIGN-FC or visit ReignFC.com today.
