TACOMA, WA—The Tacoma Stars love helping kids, so they were really excited to say yes when given the opportunity to assist a young lady named Makayla. “We were contacted by Denise Russell of WACAP, the representative/liaison who works in partnership with King 5 news on King 5’s, “Family for Me” adoption program,” says Tacoma Soccer Center Manager David Whitesell.
“Makayla put soccer down on her interest form, so Denise just happened to contact us to see what could be done. That’s when the Tacoma Soccer Center and Tacoma Stars team sprung into action to help this young lady find a family. For her video shoot, we arranged for her to have a workout and training day with two professional MASL Tacoma Stars players. Representing the Stars were Derek Johnson and Danny Minniti.”
Makayla spent approximately 45 minutes with the Stars players juggling, having fun and doing some drills, including a one on one game where Makayla effectively “snuffed” Derek and Danny out. As a surprise, the Stars presented Makayla with a Stars t-shirt, a poster signed by Derek and Danny, and an official Stars soccer ball. See her video feature here.
“It is amazing and humbling to be a part of something like this,” Whitesell says. “To see Makayla’s eyes light up as she interacted with the local Stars players. To experience her caring spirit. To see local players so graciously give their time and to genuinely have so much fun doing it. We wish her all the best in finding a loving family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her and the thousands of children who need to be adopted.”
