Sounders U23 keeper Cladwell called to U20 World Cup

North Carolina native Jeff Caldwell was named as one of three goalkeepers to the U.S. U20 Men’s World Cup roster earlier this week. The 19-year old has been a member of both the U17 and U18 U.S. developmental training pools prior to his call up with the U20’s. He will be entering his second season at the University of Virginia this fall. The U20 World Cup will be held May 30th- June 20th in the host country of New Zealand.

“I am honored to say that I will be joining the US U20 Men’s National team for the U20 FIFA World Cup this summer.” Caldwell said, “Unfortunately my time spent in New Zealand means I will miss several games of the PDL season. However, I am very excited to join Sounders U23 after the conclusion of the tournament in order to pursue a PDL National Championship.”

The starting goalkeeper for the Sounders U23 team, Caldwell played all but two games during the 2014 season for the Sounders U23 side while training daily with the Sounders FC first team.

“We are very happy for Jeff and we hope the experience at the World Cup is fruitful for him” said Sounders U23 head coach Darren Sawatzky. “We look forward to Jeff returning sharp for the PDL games in June and July.”

Caldwell will miss six Sounders U23 league games due to his World Cup obligations. The full U20 World Cup groupings and schedule can be found at http://www.fifa.com/u20worldcup.
