BELLINGHAM, WA— (Sounders U23 release) The Sounders U23 team traveled to Bellingham to take on the Bellingham Hammers in the second pre-season friendly game of the week. The game would see 25 shots on goal for the Sounders U23 with only one finding the net.

The game started quickly with Isidro Prado-Huerta firing a shot off the post in the second minute. Derek Johnson followed almost immediately with a strike saved by the Bellingham keeper. On the ensuing play, the Sounders U23 were whistled for a foul at the half line. Bellingham launched a ball into the box that caused a scramble that resulted in a bicycle kick goal for the Hammers.

As the half moved on, the game settled and the Sounders U23 maintained possession through midfield and Alex DeCarolis started to attack up the left flank. Several crosses resulted in shots on goal but the Sounders U23 were unable to finish the opportunities until DeCarolis overlapped Prado-Huerta and zipped a cross to the back post for Florian Valot to slot home and level the score.

Half time brought some changes for the Sounders U23 team as players are on trial to make the official roster for the PDL season. The Sounders U23 team kept control of the game through possession and attacks on goal but the Bellingham goalkeeper saved chance after chance with three different balls coming off the post and back into play.
With 15 minutes remaining in the game, Nick Cashmere got behind the Sounders U23 defense and chipped a ball that hit the crossbar for the Hammers but didn’t fall for the home team. The final whistle blew and the game ended in a tie.

The Sounders U23 continue to have players arrive this week for the PDL season. The final pre-season friendly will be this Sunday, May 17th against the South Sound Shock at 2pm at Sunset Stadium in Sumner. Tickets can be purchased at
