EPLWA Players of the Week for May 31, 2015: Galvan (Wenatchee), Srock (Spokane)

square logo all blackThe Evergreen Premier League has completed its sixth week of play with all eight clubs seeing action. This week there were three shut outs. There were also numerous saves, take-aways, tackles, moments of admirable teamwork and individual stand-out plays. There was also the highest-scoring match in EPLWA history.

Two players are honored this week for their performances, which elevated them above the crowd and into the books as our Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Eleazar Galvan (Wenatchee FC, Offense) and Jeff Srock (Spokane Shadow, Defense) are this week’s choices. As a part of this recognition both will receive unique, custom EPLWA socks designed especially for the league by Rock’em Apparel.

The Evergreen Premier League is a dynamic competition. You never know what kind of match you are going to get. The three shut outs this week were balanced out by 6-5 and 5-1 scorelines in two other contests. Yakima United scored six goals on Friday but then were denied by outstanding goalkeeping from Jeff Srock in Spokane on Saturday. Wenatchee FC bounced back from last week’s losses with a second hat trick from the league’s leading scorer, Eleazar Galvan.

OFFENSE: Eleazar Galvan
(Wenatchee FC) becomes the first player ever to win more than one Player of the Week honor in the same season. Last time he got socks for his hat trick in the first half of a 4-1 Capitals win over the Olympic Force in Bremerton. This week he repeated the feat, scoring three goals in the second half as Wenatchee pulled away from a 1-1 half time draw to score a 5-1 win over the Force. He scored in the 48th, 51st (match-winner) and 71st to push WFC’s cause.

Eleazar’s 3-peat is also the first time a player has scored multiple hat tricks in an EPLWA season. He now has 8 goals on the season, leading the league.

Galvan, who played at Skagit Valley in the NWAC and plans to transfer to Western Washington University this Fall, was awarded male “Athlete of the Year” for the Cardinals on May 28.

“Eleazar is playing at a very high level for us this year,” says Wenatchee FC co-owner Javier Reyna. “He is leading by example with his 8 goals, but when you ask him about individual awards, he would rather talk about how Wenatchee FC is doing…and how the team is coming together.”

Galvan led the Chelan Goats to the WIAA state title while he was in high school. “We didn’t want to end our high school career without a state title because we knew we had all that it would take,” he remembers. “We knew there were things that we needed to work on, but we truly believed in each other my senior year. We came back to Sumner (for State) and won it all. We were State Champs! I couldn’t believe it. The best moment was when I scored the first goal to give us the lead in the state championship game and pointing at my coach and seeing tears come down his eyes.”

DEFENSE: Jeff Srock (Spokane Shadow) made a handful of great saves last Saturday night that kept the high-scoring Yakima United Hoppers off the scoreboard in a 2-0 Shadow win over their rivals.

“He’s unbelievable. Man of the match, hands down – no questions about it,” Shadow coach Chad Brown said of Srock after the match. “He’s been fantastic. He’s his own worst critic, and I hope that he’s feeling pretty proud of himself tonight because he absolutely kept us in that game and was super calm about it at halftime.” (INWsoccerNews)

Srock (CC Spokane / Mt Spokane) put up one of the best individual performances in front of net the Shadow has seen in its first two seasons in EPLWA. The veteran 6’6” keeper made numerous stops on the night, denying several close-range efforts with quick reaction stops and making an incredible one-on-one stop at the top of the box against Hector Valdovinos, one of Yakima’s most dangerous players and regular threat on the night, during a breakaway in the 25th minute. A local product from Spokane, Jeff was a two-time First Team All-GSL goalkeeper, twice earning the league’s Defensive MVP award, while also earning First Team All-State accolades his senior year at Mt. Spokane High School. In high school, Jeff played semi-professionally for the Spokane Shadow of the USL PDL, where he logged minutes against Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. Jeff then went on to play his freshman year at Gonzaga University, where he logged four starts in Gonzaga’s spring season, earning valuable game experience against the Seattle Sounders of the USL First Division. From there, Jeff transferred to the Community of Colleges of Spokane, where he earned First Team All-NWAACC honors, posting eleven shutouts while helping lead Spokane to the NWAACC Championship Game in 2007. Jeff finished his playing career at Whitworth University, where he led the Pirates to a second straight NWC Men’s Soccer Title  and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. Srock is now a coach with Spokane (CCS) of the NWAC.
