AUSTIN, TX — (school release) Western Washington University made two first-half goals stand up as it defeated St. Edward’s University, 2-1, in a non-conference women’s soccer contest between two nationally ranked teams on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Lewis-Chen Family Field on the St. Edward’s campus.
The Vikings, ranked No.12 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 4-1-0.
St. Edward’s, rated No.6, suffered its first loss in falling to 3-1-0. The Hilltoppers had previously allowed just one goal this season.
WWU scored both of its goals in the first half.
In the ninth minute, the Vikings’ Emily Webster (So., Bellingham/Sehome) got a failed clearance at the top of the box and scored on a low hard shot from 16 yards.
WWU made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute as Catherine Miles (Sr., Anacortes) got a through ball from Savanna Moorehouse (Sr., Bonney Lake) and put in a soft shot to the left of the goalkeeper. The goal was Miles’ third of the young season and the second assist for Moorehouse.
St. Edward’s cut the deficit to one in the first minute of the second half. Sabrina Cone scored her third goal of the year on a rebound from six yards.
“It was a real gutsy effort by our team to come on the road and beat a high-powered opponent like this,” said WWU coach Travis Connell (13th year, 161-63-24).
“We knew that we needed to get off to a fast start, which we did, and then it was a matter of willpower … Being able to grind it out like we did is a sign of a championship team.”
In their only other meeting on Nov. 24, 2013, the Vikings blanked St. Edwards, 2-0, in a national quarterfinal game at Bellingham.
WWU begins Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept., 19 (3:30 p.m.), at Western Oregon University.
