BUZZ: Sergio Martinez recently got very unfortunate news when not feeling well suddenly turned into a diagnosis of Leukemia. Sergio’s friends, many of them involved in the local soccer community in Everett, Shoreline and elsewhere around the Northwest, sprung into action and are using social media to keep Sergio’s spirits up as well as to raise money to help ease the finances during his battle.
Sergio played soccer at Jerome High School in Idaho, and college soccer for four seasons at Trinity Lutheran in Everett. This past summer he played for OSA FC of the NPSL. He’s listed as an assistant coach with the Shoreline CC Dolphins.
Shoreline Head Coach George Dremousis coached Martinez at Trinity and now has Sergio on his Dolphins staff. He’s also helping get the word out about Sergio’s fight.
FOLLOW-UP: Leukemia is a blood cancer that can strike otherwise healthy people like Sergio without much warning. Martinez will rely on his fighting spirit, doctors, treatment and his community of support in the weeks ahead.
Sergio loves playing and coaching soccer. This passion is another asset in his fight. He wants to get back into the game as soon as possible.
