BELLINGHAM, WA — (school release) Western Washington University scored three times in less than 10 minutes midway through the second half in blanking Saint Martin’s University, 3-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer contest on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Harrington Field on the WWU campus.
The Vikings, ranked No.5 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 6-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in GNAC play with its fourth straight victory.
SMU fell to 1-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference action.
Freshman Gabriela Pelogi (Federal Way) opened the scoring in the 58th minute with her first collegiate goal, heading home a cross from Stephanie Hamilton (Sr., Orting/Bellarmine Prep) that was set up by Sophia Kallas (Fr., Boise, Id.)
Savanna Moorehouse (Sr., Bonney Lake) doubled the margin less than five minutes later, finishing a corner kick by Emily Webster (So., Bellingham/Sehome) with a header in traffic.
Taylor Hallquist (Fr., Vancouver/Columbia River) completed the scoring in the 68th minute, surging forward from left back and taking a shot from a tight angle that deflected off a defender and went in.
The goals were also the first of the season for Moorehouse and Hallquist.
“We wanted to get off to a fast start and we did that,” said WWU head coach Travis Connell (13th year, 163-63-24). “We got contributions from a lot of people.”
The Vikings, who claimed their ninth consecutive victory over SMU, had massive advantages of 27-4 in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks. The Saints did not have a shot attempt until seven minutes into the second half.
The attendance of 710 was the largest since Harrington Field opened to start the 2014 season.
“It was great to be back home,” Connell said. “The players fed off the crowd and there was a great atmosphere and energy here tonight.”
WWU is at Simon Fraser University for a GNAC contest on Saturday, Sept. 26 (5 p.m.).
