SPOKANE, WA – (WhitworthPirates.com) Karl Muelheims gave Whitworth an early lead and Rylan Berriman added a second-half goal as third-ranked Whitworth earned a 2-0 victory over visiting Whitman on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Whitworth (10-0-1, 6-0-1) recorded its eighth shutout of the season against Whitman (1-8-1, 1-5-1).
Muelheims netted his conference-leading ninth goal of the season in the 10th minute, maintaining possession as he fought past a slew of defenders in a crowded box to score from five yards away to the lower-left corner of the goal.
Whitworth doubled its lead in the 71st minute when Spencer Wolfe sent a long, high-arcing through-ball pass from the midfield up to a streaking Berriman, who found himself in a one-on-one situation with the Whitman goalkeeper. He finished to the left corner of the net from roughly 10 yards away for his second goal of the season.
The Missionaries gained possession early and generated two shots on goal in the opening minutes of the match, but it was Whitworth that controlled a majority of the possession and scoring chances during the afternoon.
The Pirates totaled 10 shots in the opening half and put four shots on goal during the first half. Whitworth nearly scored a second first-half goal when Sean Bender hit the crossbar with a shot attempt in the 41st minute.
The Missionaries had six first-half shots and put three on frame. Berriman’s goal was the lone shot on goal for either team after halftime.
The Pirates held a 16-9 advantage in shot attempts for the match and had six corner kick chances compared with two for the Missionaries.
Timmy Costa collected three saves for the Pirates. Whitman goalkeeper Milo Cantor made four saves.
The Pirate men will remain at home to host George Fox and Pacific (Ore.) next weekend.
