Huskies top Beavers 3:0 to clinch second in Pac-12

The University of Washington Men beat Oregon State 3:0 before over 1,400  fans on Friday night at a cold, windy Husky Soccer Field. The Dawgs clinch second place in the Pac-12 and await Monday’s NCAA tournament selection announcements.

The match marked the final regular season home contest for a group of seniors who took different routes to the school.

The Huskies took the lead in the 22nd minute when Quinton Beasley alertly took a misplay from Oregon State goalkeeper Steve Spangler and calmly put it into the back of the net. The Dawgs doubled their lead before halftime when Jamie Finch recorded the first of his two assists on the night. Finch’s long pass was caught up to by Jacob Hustedt just as Spangler was coming out to challenge the play. Hustedt got the shot past the keeper in the 31st minute.

“It was senior day and the seniors were brilliant so it was a really nice way to go out,” said head coach Jamie Clark at GoHuskies.com. “It was a huge win for us. You want to put a stamp on it and 3-0 does it. We couldn’t have ended the regular season any better. There is no team, probably other than UCLA, in the country that is hotter than us right now. We are winning games comfortably and it’s a fun team to watch. We have been getting ranked and the attention in the polls so hopefully that is good enough.”

Washington completed the scoring late on when Casey McCool scored from Finch. This time Washington converted via a corner kick.

The Beavers were reduced to ten men in the 88th minute when Josh Von Allworden was red carded for taking a Washington attacker down just outside the box as the last defender. The following free kick came to nothing. The match ended with a 22-9 shots advantage for Purple.

The Huskies complete their regular season with an overall record of 12-4-2, 7-3 in the Pac-12.

“I’m so happy and so relieved that we got that win,” said two-assist man Jamie Finch. “It was never going to be easy, OSU is hard to play against, but I think we always believed we were going to get this win and this is what we thought it was going to take to get into the playoffs. We are really looking forward to Monday to see if we get in. Hopefully we should be in but you never know.”

The NCAA D-1 Men’s Soccer selection will take place Monday November 14 at 1:30 PM PST.
