SEATTLE, WA— (club release) Seattle Reign FC has signed midfielder Emily Van Egmond, co-captain of the Australian Women’s National Team. Van Egmond most recently played for the Newcastle Jets in the Australian W-League, winning “W-League Goal of the Year” in April of 2013. Van Egmond was also a member of the Western New York Flash in 2012 when they captured the WPSL Elite championship. Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Thursday night at Starfire the Reign beat the Western New York Flash, 3:2.

Reign FC agreed to terms with Van Egmond in mid-June, but delayed having her join the club so she could play a series of friendly matches in Europe with the Australian National Team. Van Egmond will be available for selection in Seattle’s match against the Washington Spirit this Sunday, July 14.

“Emily is a young, talented and creative midfielder with enormous upside,” said Laura Harvey, head coach and GM of Seattle Reign FC. “We believe she can make an immediate impact as we make a push for the playoffs over the final seven matches of the season.”

In order to make room on the roster for Van Egmond, Seattle has placed forward Kennya Cordner on waivers. Cordner, who was brought up in mid-June from the Reign FC Reserves, played in three games for Reign FC, starting in two matches and logging 124 minutes. During Cordner’s time with Reign FC the club was undefeated, collecting eleven points from three wins and two draws.

“We added Kennya to our roster on a temporary basis, knowing it would be a few weeks before Van Egmond would be able to join the club,” said Harvey. “To her great credit, Kennya was able to quickly fit into the squad and help us turn the season around during her short stay with the senior team. We think she is a terrific player and hope she can play a role with the club in the future.”

Tickets are still available for this Sunday’s nationally televised match against the Washington Spirit this Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on the Moda Health Pitch at Starfire Stadium. Prices for single match tickets are $26 for Premium Grandstand seating, $22 for Grandstand seating and $19 for Bleacher seating.
