Snow kidding: Bellingham United tryouts go on with gusto

8 am, Saturday morning, rain mixed with hail and snow. You really couldn’t ask for a more perfect scenario for tryouts.

Bellingham United FC hosted its first tryouts on Saturday, March 17 at Whatcom Community Colleges field. There were about 55 guys trying out.

Most were from Whatcom or Skagit counties, but there were a few from far reaching areas. There were players from Italy, France, England and Denmark. Players drove up from Seattle and the Kitsap peninsula. It was shocking to see the large turnout given the circumstances.

It was an exciting sight to see for the coaches, players and a few fans that came.

It started out with three small games being played; Yellows vs. Blues. Everyone showing that they deserve to be looked at. It went from there to having a full 11 vs. 11 with the other trialists sitting out and rotating in.

Bellingham United FC head coach Lance Calloway called on a few colleagues to help watch.

“I saw several solid players,” Calloway said. “I’m pleased with the talent pool that we have. We will have a few more guys turn out next week too that weren’t able to make it, so that’s exciting.”

The second tryout is scheduled for March 24, at 8 am at Whatcom Community College. The plans are a little different for next week.

“We will only play big games,” Calloway said. “It gives these guys another chance to prove themselves.”

No one was turned away from today’s tryouts and everyone that came is invited back next week. There are also a few players that have registered that were unable to make it.

The players made some great passes, awesome shots and a couple jaw dropping saves. All in all, the season is looking bright for Bellingham United. And coaches Lance Calloway and Scott Caldwell have some difficult decisions ahead of them.
