Tacoma Stars advance in US Open for Arena Soccer

2011-12_US_Open_cup_logo_indoorTACOMA, Wash. – The Tacoma Stars bounced back from a ten-goal loss on Saturday night against the San Diego Sockers to deliver their own punishment by the same margin on Sunday afternoon in the US Open for Arena Soccer. Tacoma got four goals from Ian Weinberg to take out Oregon Blacktails FC, 12:2 at the Pacific Sports Center.

The US Open for Arena Soccer features play-in tournaments followed by match-ups with PASL sides. Blacktails FC, an expansion PASL Premier side from Salem, Oregon, won a spot to play the Stars in a recent qualification tournament. The San Diego Sockers won the Open in 2011-12.

Oregon also did double duty last weekend, hosting a league match against the Marysville Ruckus in Salem at 9:30 PM Saturday night using s split roster while another group traveled up I-5 to play the Stars at 2:05 PM on Sunday.

Other goal scorers for the Stars were Steve Mohn (2), Steve Cumbee (2), Mark Lee, Raphael Cox, Amos Frieheit, and Sean Morris. Stars goalkeeper Dave Meherg was subbed out due to injury in the second quarter and field players Mark Lee and Sean Morris played the position for the rest of the match.

The victory keeps Tacoma alive for the national cup. The next match date and opponent for the Stars in the competition will be announced soon.

Tacoma hosts the Sacramento Surge in PASL action December 8 & 9.
