Sounders Women bring in Canadian talent with SU grad Melissa Busque

sounderswomen-newcrestTUKWILA, WA – The Sounders Women sign Canadian midfielder, Melissa Busque, adding to their roster of international imports. The announcement comes after the Sounder’s April 14th exhibition game against Oregon State, where Busque had an impressive showing despite the 0-1 defeat.

Assistant coach, Zahra Lechak said, “Melissa’s technical ability, vision on the dribble to see that final pass, and selfishness in the box are qualities you just don’t see that much among female players. Those are the things that can take you to the next level.”

Acrobatic ability can also be added to Busque’s list of qualities “you just don’t see that much” – a skill she displayed against Oregon State, with a bicycle kick attempt at goal. It’s this combination of creativity and technical prowess that both player and staff hope to utilize going forward into the 2013 season.

A recent graduate from Seattle University, Busque recorded four goals and four assists totaling 12 points for the 2012 season, the second highest on the team. Prior to joining the Redhawks, Busque spent three years at the University of Connecticut where she had 10 goals and 14 assists before transferring to Seattle University for her senior year.

The 23 year old midfielder also brings with her an impressive resume of W-League experience. From 2009-2012 Busque played with the Ottawa Fury, the defending W-league champions. Along with her championship title, during her time with the Canadian powerhouse Busque participated in three division titles, two conference championships, two final four appearances, and played in two championship matches.

Busque said, “I’m excited to be on a new team and have this great opportunity. When I played against the Sounders with the Ottawa Fury in the Final Four (2011), it was such as great environment so it’s exciting to get to be a part of that now. ”

Born in St. Bruno, Quebec, Busque’s talent was recognized early on. She participated with the U-15 and U-17 Canadian Youth National teams and represented her province on team Quebec from 2004-2006.

The Sounders Women play their second match of the season on April 26th against Seattle University. Single match tickets are currently on sale on SoundersWomen.com.

  1. Unfortunately, with Vancouver Whitecaps pulling out of the W-League, Canadian players have one less option at home.
